  1. You always make it look so easy and sound so great. I liked this organ work ever since I heard Virgil’s recording of it on the Wannamaker as a child. I understand the eight notes sounded by the bells of Westminster are based on an excerpt from Handel’s Messiah proclaiming “I know my redeemer lives…”

  2. Your Version of this piece is really beautifull! But that someone is right about the registration. Well, i also like this version, but look at the Version of Oliver Latry. The playing of yours is formidable but at the beginning…. there are 2′ stops with it, right? If im right, there should be some notes in the score, such as fonds 16′, 8′, 4′ . You can use this if you please ;)Greetings: MegaDani141

  4. Thank you for such an inspired performance – I enjoyed your effortless playing and rhythmic drive, ( often one hears this piece played too fast and without clarity).

  5. Performance seems ok to me. Every performer is entitled to their own degree of ‘interpretation’. Whether you like the instrument itself is also up to the individual. For me, I once heard this piece being played in Westminster Abbey whilst sitting in the Quire. The chimes of Big Ben were had just finished when the performance began. Nothing else compares before or since, nothing else stands up to that performance given by Simon Preston back in the mid-1980s.

  6. OMG! You buy a CD of organ music you like and then burble on about the organist not showing any emotion?! What is Dr Jackson supposed to do – bow and scrape at the console with a cheesy toothpaste smile on his face? Such criticisms are vacuous and unhelpful. Dr Jackson may well one day approach the stature of his namesake (retired) of Yorkminster.

  7. One of the hardest things as a musician is to tackle a piece which is known to everyone who loves the instrument you play – and this is just one of those pieces. I imagine everyone who plays the organ thinks they know how this should go – even if they don’t play it themselves. Personally, I found this performance technically assured and musically compelling. And very enjoyable too. Congratulations!

  10. Sigh…why do people always have to start a fight when someone criticises a performance. Everyone has the right to express his opinion as long as it doesn’t get offending. I would be careful when estimating a users competence only based on the shortness of their comment. You might be wrong…Maybe I should write a whole essay? But that would go way to far…I recommend Ben van Oosten’s recording of this piece in St. Ouen, France. There you’ll hear everything you need to know. Kindest regards.

  11. So heartening to know that Dr. Sean Jackson has such a ready cohort of capable and qualified individuals to whom he can turn for reliable guidance on how to better his “not bad” technique and “barely any emotions” rendition!! For my part, I have enjoyed his interpretation of this splendid piece. It may be instructive that none of the critics here have identified themselves as professional organists. Always allow your understanding room enough to grow.

  12. Forgive me for not seeing the need for the majority of this comment. “Can be” needs to be replaced with “are”, since ethnicity and talent/skill have never been at odds with each other. All ethnic groups are possessed of the same faculties. It is usually lack of opportunity (for whatever reason) that creates any misconception.

  13. Blacks can bexcellent organists, and surgeons, and singers, and bricklayers, and pilots, and attorneys, and plumbers, and engineers, etc., etc. He can improve this and make it absolutely wonderful. His pedal facility is excellent!

  14. Tempo rushes in some places. No ritardando, such as at 4:39 and other places where it would be natural and welcome?Seems rushed and mechanical. At 4:24 I slightly lengthen the pedal notes. At 5:32 I do not shorten the pedal and left hand notes. I make the chords longer and more powerful.Nice, clean performance but disappointing.Wonderful hands!Well done video!

  16. This guy’s technique is not bad, but I have to agree with “iomanorgan” that there are barely any emotions. It’s too straight, no effects, sometimes way too fast! But it looks like the touch of the manuals tempts to play in an unmusical way…

  17. Hi Sean,
This is Karl Johnson…you played on my bass trombone recital at Juilliard about 10 years ago. My 6 year old daughter started playing the “doorbell” theme on the piano this morning and I told her that there was a really cool piece based on that theme. So I did a quick Google search and found your blog. We all watched your performance of the Vierne and loved it. You do great work and it was fun to see you in action again.

  18. Vierne was always one of your favourites! I simply must watch this again when I’m in Westminster later this week!! Good luck for the show in Barbados. It is almost 15 years since our concert there! That has flown by. We are heading towards middle-age. It must be time for another Barbados recital! Perhaps my son could perform on his toy xylophone. It sounds like Stockhausen……..!!

  21. Sean – that was magnificent! I have to get larger speakers for my computer, for more accurate reproduction…and I just keep humming the tune – carillons just stick in my head, I guess. Have a great concert in Barbados. Bill and Elaine
